Some of these products I own, and some I just recommend. All of them will become very important soon as the earth cools and food and security become important. For most of the products below, I get a small (very small) commission for recommending.
Note I will be adding products as time goes by.
Non-Ham Radio – Licence free radioes
The above Cobra radios are LONG RANGE UP TO 23 MILES: Provides an extended long-range signal with 2662 channel combinations. Note from the Author – the range on these radios depends on the topography. The line of sight could possibly be 23 miles, but not in normal usage. Just so you know. These are actually very nice radios.
Note this is a 23 channel radio which covers the FRS/GMRS frequencies. You will require a cheap FCC-paid license to use the GMRS channels. The FRS (Famly Radio) is free to use by anyone.
RECHARGEABLE BATTERIES INCLUDED: Includes rechargeable batteries and a micro-USB charging cable.
10 NOAA WEATHER CHANNELS & WEATHER ALERT – Be prepared for storms and emergencies with the built-in NOAA radio receiver providing coverage of all government-operated weather channels.

The Author owns three of these radios which are used by all of us on the farm as they do not require a license.

Get your Ham License
If you really want good communications, I would suggest that you get your ham radio license at a minimum the Technician level which is easy to do. Here is a good study guide – Ham Radio no longer required code to pass an exam. All the questions and answers are in the study guide.

You will need lights
Yes, and those lights should not need the power grid to charge. The following light is what I recommend. I use this light every night to head out to my greenhouse to check it and turn off things, I probably have 10 of these and have given them as presents. Everyone is happy with them. The first one I purchased over 5 years ago is still working like the day I purchased it. I highly recommend this light

Personal protection is – well so personal. Here is one item that I have owned for years, and it is a KABAR knife. This is the large size unlike it smaller version which is next. The KABAR is used by law enforcement and those who like to carry something that does not cause all that much attention. I place mine on the left side of my belt so I can cross-draw if I choose. This knife is sharp so be careful. I have owned mine for 6 years. Love it. Highly recommended.

And then there is the small version. This one can be worn around the neck and is called the Ka-Bar TDI Law Enforcement LDK (Last Ditch Knife) with Hard Sheath. I love mine but parted with it when I gave it to my young Grandson. This is a great personal defense knife. I talked to one fellow who gave it to his young daughter to wear when she goes out. Good idea! I purchased mine 5 years ago. This little dude is sharp and very pointy. Great quality and highly recommended. Note: when you put your index finger through the hole on the knife, it becomes almost impossible for someone to take it from you.
Note: I would not like to meet up with someone with the above two knives in the day or night.
