Water, water everywhere, nor any drop to drink
This saying was coined by Poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834) in The Rime of the Ancient Mariner (1798).
Yes, humans are made of water and water makes up 60% or more of your body weight. If you have a water loss of 3 to 4% you can end up dehydrated. If you lose any more it will eventually become fatal. If you have water to drink and have a little fat around your middle (like me), then it's possible to survive one or more months with no food. After three days and no water, you will really start dying. As you can see, water is really crucial to sustaining your life and also animal life. While water is necessary as a component in you staying alive, GOOD PURE WATER is even more important and is the subject of this blog.
I suspect that bad water has been the cause of poor health and death over the centuries. Good clean and pure water now in 2022 is even harder to obtain because of pollution. All kinds of really bad things can end up in the water supply. Water that is not from a municipal water system like a pond or lake can easily make you really sick and damage parts of your body that deal with water intakes like your liver and your digestive system. Many diseases lurk and can be fatal in polluted water. Even a municipal water system can contain unhealthy amounts of harmful contaminants such as chlorine, heavy metals, industrial and agricultural pollutants, and trace pharmaceuticals. that have gotten into aquafers that supply city water.
As a prepper, you should be concerned about your and your family's water supply. You drink and cook and bathe with water every day. If for some reason you must find water to drink, having the proper equipment to filter water becomes a life or death situation.
You can purify most water by boiling it. While Boiling water will kill any biological contaminants like water-borne viruses or bacteria, it will not remove things like heavy metals, salts, radiation, or chemicals. If you are boiling water, make sure you remove solids. Either let the solids settle out or run through a cloth filter.
"Experts on the subject state that you should bring the water to a boil and keep it rolling for one minute to purify it. At altitudes above one mile, 2,000 meters, you should increase the rolling time to three minutes."
Purifying by adding liquid chlorine bleach
The following is From the Department of Health - Washington state.
- Treat water by adding liquid household bleach, such as Clorox or Purex.
- Household bleach is typically between 5.25 percent and 8.25 percent chlorine. Read the label.
- Avoid using bleaches that contain perfumes, dyes and other additives. Be sure to read the label.
- Cloudy water should be filtered before adding bleach.
- Place the water in a clean container. Add the amount of bleach according to the table below.
- Mix thoroughly and let stand for at least 60 minutes before drinking.

Caution: Bleach will not kill some disease-causing organisms commonly found in surface water. Bleach will not remove chemical pollutants.
Purifying Water Tablets
Purifying tablets don’t clean or filter the sediments and particles in the water. Usually, these products can come in solid but also liquid form.
These tablets are used to purify water for you if you are camping, hiking, traveling, and also in emergency preparedness situations. Here is one I suggest at Amazon.
They claim not to have the nasty taste as some tablets. I have used these tablets years back (not this product) while camping and they had a nasty iodine taste in the water.
Good prepper item to have on hand.
Three Water Filter Solutions
Filter 1 - Sawyer Products MINI Water Filtration System. I have used the Sawyer products for years. They are rather inexpensive and really work. They have a method of backflushing the filter. and will filter large amounts of water. This is an ideal filter you can find HERE.
Filter 2 - LifeStraw Family 1.0 Portable Gravity Powered Water Purifier for Emergency Preparedness and Camping. Own two of these, one for my home and one for a backup. These are used globally to purify water. You can find it HERE.
Filter 3 - Tired of purchasing bottled water or drinking water at work or at home that tastes horrible? The Epic Personal filter is for you. Also saves crazy amounts of plastic bottles from trash dumps. You can find it HERE.
Filter 1 and 2 are great prepping filters, and filter 3 is a good option for your day-to-day needs at home or work, or traveling.
A good water filter is a MUST if you are a prepper.
OK, that ends this blog for January 5th. 2022. Hopefully, if you are a prepper some of the above made you think about water. If you are a crazy full-time prepper and have not prepped for a good clean source of water, and then if things go south, as they say, it will not matter what other equipment or preparations you have made. Simply put - No good clean water - No Life!
At present, here on the farm, we have two very large water catchment tanks that collect rainwater from our large shop/barn.
Cheers from Central Texas
